Give it to whichever martial party member brought cookies to the table that day and watch them love you. Some other Subclasses you might consider:įorge-Best as a dip for low-level campaigns, but remember that their first ability lets you add +1 to a weapon or armor. Peace is also a terrific Cleric Subclass whose primary ability is basically a mini-bless you can keep up all the time, it stacks with bless, and it progresses with your Character level, not Class level, so it gets better even with Bard levels.Ĭleric also gives you some low-level heal spell options so you don't have to waste your precious Bard Spells Known just to have them on hand (keep a Healing Word around on your memorized Cleric spells to save someone who just hit 0 HP).

Order is great because you can give up additional attacks with every buff you cast (especially good since you have a party full of people who will like using the attack action). Just getting Guidance as a cantrip and Bless as a first level spell really ramps up the Bard's ability to be a support character. I'm going to second a 1 level cleric dip as a support caster. With wrong positioning, it can be brutal on your team (which can also be funny from time to time). You can also pick how big the affected zone is, so depending on positioning it can be brutal on your enemies. If your ranger can drop Entangle on top of that then the enemies movement grinds to a complete standstill. It's an awful spell (for your enemies) if you have melee opponents. If you are at level 3 spells, keep a watch out for Plant Growth. Obviously not most optimal option at all times, but definitely a fun one. If you have already Polymorph, then just turn into a big beast and tear up the dancefloor. If you don't have damaging options, take a feat giving you some offensive cantrips if you don't want to waste your spells.Įspecially with bards I also focus on roleplaying my every inspiration giving activity - it's fun, it's free, bring out a kazoo and make everyone listen to it.

It only makes sense to heal if you really enjoy healing, but if you don't forget about that. Only raise people from being unconscious and otherwise do anything else. I myself always try to play support classes using a lot of buffs, because of the legendary resistances issue you mentioned.Īlso remember NOT TO HEAL.

I wasn’t sure which flair to apply so I did classes and archetypes, feel free to change it if necessary.Īt what level are you? It would be helpful to know to suggest better spells and/or strategies. Anyways, my question is, how can I reframe my mental/play style/build to have more fun in the combat aspect of dnd while filling a supportive role for the team? I would lean into a more disable heavy role, however being the only character with real forms of cc it kind of sucks spending my first several turns burning through legendary resistances to get one through, assuming they fail their saves. Maybe it’s just me but it feels really unfulfilling having my primary role just be as a healbot in combat. Our party is composed of myself, a rogue, a ranger, a paladin, and a fighter, which leaves me mostly alone with heals, spells, and the like. However once combat rolls around it becomes something of chore. She’s a joy to rp as and it’s fun pretending to have musical talent. So I’m playing a 5e college of glamours bard. Support players, how do you all enjoy playing a more supportive role in combat?
